Why shouldn’t we start teaching journalism in first grade? It’s the linchpin of our democracy.

Earlier this week, a friend of mine took his own life. He was 35.

I keep turning things over in...

Earlier this week, a friend of mine took his own life. He was 35.

I keep turning things over in my head, looking up information on the internet and talking with friends to try and make sense of it— not the reason why Jeff took his life. That’s clear. He was bipolar and severely depressed and over the last couple years hit a succession of lower bottoms— I’m trying to make sense of myself.

One minute I’m overcome with emotion. Then, for the next hour, I’m studying the color and texture of birch, wondering how I’ve lived 40 years and never appreciated the beauty of bark. I see Jeff as he was when I first met him and on that last day.

Time is weird. More like plasma than a liquid or gas. I don’t even know what that even means? But it’s in my head. Time is weird.

I’ve learned things that I shouldn’t know, like the stages of death— palor, algor, rigor and livor mortis. There are three others but they don’t really have the ring of the mortises. I just needed to know.

I’ve also talked with friends and my darling Sweets. I’ve listened, too. I’ve cried. I’ve made terrible jokes. I cleaned my office and trashed hundreds of work emails. HA! I’ve laid in bed, just staring at the ceiling, dwelling. I’ve smoked, declared that I’ll never smoke again then smoked again. I’ve had no drinks and many drinks. I’ve done healthy things then followed up by eating poorly. I’ve felt so sad. I felt nothing. I felt everything. I’ve had clarity and been confused. And when I’m stuck, I talk with friends and my darling Sweets. In other words: I’m alive.

I feel selfish staying all up in my head. I won’t dwell. But I’ve decided that being selfish is what I need right now. Perhaps you need that too.

The day after, I went to a bar. I sat next to a young man who just returned from Germany and was enjoying his favorite meal there. We started talking. He was an Air Force loadmaster and asked if that meant anything to me. I told him it did.

“Yeah, we’re the jerks that tell you what to do on the aircraft” he said, joking.

“You were also the guys that gave us a box lunch on the way home.”

Suddenly, I’m remembering these box lunches. The cool, slightly damp cardboard, flat meat/cheese sandwiches that looked more like cross sections of a riverbed than food, an apple and condiments. But I could feel the felt-like texture of the bread in my hands. I could feel the sandwich paste stick to the roof of my mouth and it’s like I’m in the back of that plane again, returning from Haiti.

I remember feeling comfort.

That was all mine.

If you’re feeling suicidal, please contact a friend or family member. If that’s not an option, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK or go to their chat. You probably can’t see it now, but people do care about you.

City of tomorrow (Taken with instagram)

City of tomorrow (Taken with instagram)

the-overlook-hotel:

Obit of the Day: Wrote WKRP in Cincinnati Theme

Tommy Wells was a graduate of Vanderbilt University with a degree in philosophy, who dreamed of becoming an Army pilot. Unfortunately, a heart defect prevented him from flying. But for the good of 70s pop culture Wells found a second calling: writing theme songs and commercial jingles.

Although much of his work was best-known in the Atlanta area, Wells moved to Los Angeles in 1974 and while there he was asked to write the theme song for a sit-com that focused on the exploits of the staff at a struggling rock station in Ohio’s third largest city. WKRP in Cincinnati would run for four seasons on CBS and earned ten Emmy nominations.

Mr. Wells wrote the music for the theme, while series creator Hugh Wilson (who also had an Atlanta connection, basing WKRP on his own experiences in Atlanta radio) wrote the lyrics. The song was sung by Steve Carlisle. It was as successful as the show and was released as a single hitting #65 on the Billboard charts in 1978 and hitting #29 in 1982 on the Adult Contemporary charts.

Tommy Wells returned to Atlanta after a few years in L.A. He died at the age of 70.
